Step by Step through Stroke and Cardiomyopathy

A set of illustrated Health Guides to cardiomyopathy and stroke
A set of illustrated Health Guides to cardiomyopathy and stroke

In 2024 the Irish Heart Foundation released two user-friendly patient health guides to living with Cardiomyopathy and Stroke. These health guides give practical tips on how to manage life after diagnosis, information to support recovery and rehabilitation, and contact details for medical and community support services.

It was key that these guides were designed to be user-friendly, and easy to follow, a new approach to patient resources, being less clinical and more relatable.

Sully Productions created a suite of illustrated patient and family characters and a team of medical professionals, of varying ages, ethnicities and genders for each guide. These characters participated in this journey to recovery and interacted with medical staff along their way.

Both documents were designed with an “Easy Read” style prioritising accessibility and comprehension for a wider audience.

UCC and the Irish Heart Foundation

University College Cork working with the Irish Heart Foundation produced an extensive report and summary document detailing a radical new approach to preventing chronic heart disease, that would save thousands of lives each year and protect an already stretched health service.

This study aimed to push Government departments to invest in brave policy measures to prevent people dying from heart disease.

Sully Productions was engaged to design this report. It required multiple complex graphs and charts, as well as accessible infographics to illustrate health statistics and highlight key data that would influence government departments to implement change.

Annual report cover design

As a graphic designer specialising in the curation of annual report design, my focus is on delivering visually impactful and informative digital and print design products with great marketing potential that showcase a charity’s achievements and future goals from year to year.

The Irish Heart Foundation supports and campaigns for people who have been affected by heart and strokes throughout their lives. Sully Productions has been providing design support services to the Irish Heart Foundation since 2020, including the design of their Annual Reports, fundraising campaigns, research documents, community information leaflets and pre-budget submissions.

Annual report cover design

Crafting an annual report requires a thoughtful blend of clear data presentation and compelling storytelling, ensuring that both key statistics and emotional narratives are conveyed seamlessly.

I use a combination of engaging infographics, charts, and emotive imagery to showcase the Irish Heart Foundation’s impact on heart health, that make the report both visually appealing and easy to understand.

Stop Targeting Kids

Junk food brands are targeting children and it’s working. The Irish heart Foundation’s ‘Stop Targeting Kids’ campaign  wants the Government to actions to protect children in Ireland from junk food marketing.

I designed digital and print campaign material aimed at parents, students and government departments that would highlight how unmitigated marketing of unhealthy food products to children affects the health of future generations.

Pre-Budget Submission

Pre-Budget Submissions are strategic documents that outline priority areas where government funding and policy attention should be focused.

I have designed several PBS documents for the Irish Heart Foundation.

Heart of the City

The Heart of our City programme supports GPs, pharmacists, and community groups in Dublin 8 to better understand heart disease.

This booklet lists medical services and social resources available to this community. The project required a unique identity and is approved by Nala (Plain english standard). This resource will go nationwide in 2025.

3000 Jumps in July

‘3000 Jumps in July’ is a fundraising campaign whereby people can skip to raise money for the Irish Heart Foundation and raise awareness about heart disease.

The character set created originally for the ‘Get off your chair’ campaign were back to demonstrate how to participate in this event.

The campaign was run via social media where participants could post their progress using these illustrated resources.

Fixing Food Together

Fixing Food

The Climate and Health Alliance launched its Sustainable Diets report entitled ‘Fixing Food Together’ in May 2023 at a landmark conference that featured a host of domestic and international speakers and experts.

This report aims to tackle the increasingly fraught subjects of food production, public health and the environment. It presents key data to support the motion that a more sustainable food system and a reformed agricultural sector, that generates lower emissions, will promote overall better and lasting public health.

I was engaged to design this report, and it is a substantial piece of work, that aimed to present complex data in an engaging and accessible way, to shift perception around food production and consumption.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council

Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council is the local authority of the county of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland. Sully Productions has worked with dlr to deliver a range of strategy reports and community engagement material, including the dlr Age-Friendly, Tree and Play Strategy reports.

The 5-year strategy agreed by the dlr Age-Friendly Alliance sets out the vision, objectives and actions to promote Age-Friendly supports and activities over the coming years so that older people can engage positively within their communities for as long as possible.

dlr Play Strategy

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council launched the dlr Play Policy, a commitment to providing inclusive, safe, and adventurous play spaces for people of all ages to enjoy freely and safely.

Sully Productions designed this policy and composed maps and infographics to unfold how proposed structures and procedures could be put in place.

“This reflects our commitment to providing inclusive, safe, and adventurous play spaces for people of all ages to enjoy freely and safely.”

Special Olympics Ireland

Sully Productions was engaged by Special Olympics Ireland to design a ‘How To’ guide that will provide a range of tools to support coaches and volunteers in helping Young Athletes to develop their fundamental movement skills during their participation in the Young Athletes programme.

This guide is being used predominantly as a downloadable resource for coaches. It includes interactive video links, 48 custom illustrations to showcase how each activity is to be carried out and an internal click through navigation system.

“Let me win.

But if I cannot win,

Let me be brave in the attempt.”

Annual Reports

Sully Productions designed the Special Olympics Ireland Annual Report in 2021 and 2022.

SOI wanted a fresh design approach to showcasing the incredible work achieved by coaches, volunteers and athletes throughout the year.

Women in Sport

To mark the incredible contribution women have made to the organisation since 1968, Special Olympics Ireland produced an Action Plan that aimed to navigate how the organisation can further increase female participation moving forward, across all areas, from active athletes and coaches to advocacy and leadership positions.

I was delighted to design and deliver this Action Plan in 2023.

“Taking the lead from Sport Ireland’s Policy on Women in Sport, this groundbreaking initiative underscores our dedication to empowering women and girls with intellectual disabilities through sports, addressing the unique challenges faced by female athletes, coaches and volunteers while fostering an environment of support, opportunity, and recognition.”

Club Guide

Special Olympics Ireland seeked to develop a guide book for new coaches and volunteers, to inform them how the organisation worked.

It unfolds everything from club management structures to health and safety procedures, fundraising and finance, to how to run individual club sessions.

I designed this A5 digital interactive guide in 2023.

Charities Regulator

The Charities Governance Code published by the Charities Regulator is a resource to assist community, voluntary and charity organisations to develop their overall capacity in terms of how they run their organisation.

Collaborating with Sandra Velthuis (Whitebarn Consulting) and Sheila Cahill (Sheila Cahill Consulting), Sully Productions designed the Charities Governance Code that was published late last year.

The Charities Governance Code was designed in adherence with the NALA (National Adult Literacy Agency) design guidelines and was awarded Plain English certification.

DOT Transport

DOT Transport is led by Dr. Damien O’ Tuama, Ireland’s National Cycling Coordinator.

Damien is a passionate advocator for sustainable active travel and is dedicated to advancing transport strategies that support a greener future in Ireland.

He actively campaigns for policy changes that improve conditions for cyclists and promote active travel as a responsible alternative to fuel-dependent vehicles.

BYPAD

I was engaged by DOT to design the BYPAD (Bicycle Policy Audit), a report that provides an overview of the applied measures needed to implement best practice procedures when developing local cycling policy.

I worked in collaboration with Dublin City Council to deliver this significant piece of work that will inform policy makers and city planners on how to make Dublin a safer city for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Get Ireland Cycling

Working in collaboration with DOT, Whitebarn Consulting and Sport Ireland, we developed a strategy that would set out how to implement the necessary changes so that cycling could become firmly embedded in active travel culture.

A facilitated community workshop event was held, attended by multiple participants and stakeholders from the commuting, recreation, cycle tourism, transport planning and policy making arenas.

We curated expert feedback and grass routes experience into a cohesive report that would highlight the ‘next steps’ and best practice implementation procedures that could rebrand cycling and active transport as a viable alternative to motorised transport.

Changing public opinion about cycle infrastructure and road safety, demanding an increase in transport spending and capturing the health benefits of investment at government level was key to the success and overall mission of this report.

Zoo Advisors

We were delighted to be engaged by Zoo Advisors, to design this comprehensive Benchmark Study.

Zoo Advisors, based in Philadelphia is a full-service planning and consultancy firm focused on helping zoos, aquariums and conservation organisations to advance their missions, increase impact and grow sustainability.

The study content was data rich and they were looking for innovative ways to present this data that would improve the legibility, accessibility and overall impact of the report.
